To Dsl or not to DSL, that is the question........

O.K., folks, who is using what type of connection with what results?

After talking to Ron today about his newly aquired DSL line from Price County Tele. Co. (PCTC.NET) I decided to give the phone co. a call. Turns out Peggy is close enough to the phone co. to get DSL!!! That would be about 4 miles, any farther away and you can't get it. That's the northwoods for you. On the other hand, I haven't been in a traffic jam lately, or even heavy traffic.... and you can still swim in SOME of the lakes around here. Not in the North Fork of the Flambeau river south of Park Falls. E-coli bacteria too high!! But I digress.
Here's the skinny on DSL in Phillips:

Fill in an application for the service.
Pay $50 set-up fee.
Buy fancy-pants modem for $175.
'Dan Akroyd pants' from the phone co. hooks it up.
Pay $45/month for service (about $23 dollars more than dial-up)
Realize about a 5 fold increase in speed.

I'm thinking stongly of doing it, not sure if the better sevice is worth it. But the photo uploading issue prompts me to investigate further. So who has DSL? Anyone on cable TV type service? We asked about satellite via the DirectTV dish we have, but set-up and first month service would be in the upper $700 range, with monthly fee of about $70. Sheesh......
I gotta go, Carlo

No..... we pay the $175 for the blasted modem...... Ron was talking about firewalls and increasing security. Wouldn't it be fun to catch some sorry butt hacker???? First, slap the snot out of them, then have them "injest" , so to speak, any ruined or miscellaneous computer hardware that might be at hand..... but that's just my bad attitude!!

Where I come from, DirectTV is administrated by local entities. Ma sends a payment to Price Electric for the service. That just changed this month and payment goes to DirectTV at some far-away location. I will try calling there to customer service and see what they have for satellite prices. Maybe it's changed as well. So the phone co. does not have it's fingers in that, only the DSL. And yes, they are crooks without any competition. Sounds like that should be illegal, but we'll see......
